Happy, Happy New Year!

By Director Barbara Palmer

2016 is here!  The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) is starting the year off ready to go. The 2016 Legislative Session begins early this year starting on January 12.  APD will closely follow the action and activities occurring at the Capitol and how they might impact individuals with disabilities. I am sure there will be lots of ups and downs before any final decisions are made, so stay tuned for March when Session is supposed to finish.

This year, we will continue to be able to transition people from the waiting list to the Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services waiver.  APD will maintain our focus on jobs for people with developmental disabilities. Try out the Abilities Work job portal and help desk that assists people with disabilities so they may go to work at abilitieswork.employflorida.com. We want all our customers to work, if they chose, and to receive the supports they need to thrive.

As we continue to collaborate with our customers, families, partners, waiver support coordinators, stakeholders, and others, we expect 2016 to be another fantastic year for APD and the people we serve. Because we are working together, we have been successful. Let’s continue the momentum in the coming year.

I wish you a very Happy New Year and All the Best in 2016!
