Bowling for Success

By Anne Elizabeth Clark

Many people look forward to summer all year because they take time off work and get to be more active than usual. Mary “Wanda” Baker is not one of those people; she has fun and stays active all year long, both at work and on her own time!

Baker works in the Human Resources department of Easter Seals of Florida in Miami and receives services through the Agency for Persons with Disabilities.

After over a decade of employment with Easter Seals, Baker has developed a passion for her job and the people she interacts with at both the school and the Adult Day Program at Easter Seals. “I like the people here, and I like to have money to pay my bills,” said Baker. Her supervisor, Enid Martin, spoke highly of her dedication, loyalty, and patience, among other qualities. She has a lot of love to give, and she leaves an impression on everyone she meets and makes their day a little bit brighter.

Baker loves working and wants to work as much as she can. She takes on extra responsibilities at her job when possible and is always reliable and punctual. Never afraid of a problem, Baker loves to come up with creative solutions and inventive ways to look at situations. Marianela Wata Wara, Baker’s Waiver Support Coordinator, said, “She loves to work, and she loves her job, which makes her an excellent employee and coworker. She’s sociable and gets along with everyone.”

However, Baker isn’t a workaholic. She loves to be involved with other activities and organizations, especially ones that keep her active. On Saturdays, she volunteers with Bird Bowl bowling center as a coach and makes sure everyone involved has a chance to play and interact with others. Showing people how to bowl is only a part of her duties; her main objective is to ensure that everyone has a good time. “I like to volunteer with bowling because I get to help people and have fun at the same time,” Baker said.

Additionally, Baker participates in Special Olympics as she has for many years. She has made it up to state-level competitions, and she has won several medals throughout the years. “I love Special Olympics because it’s fun, and I get to play sports and have a good time,” Baker said about her favorite aspects of the program. She especially likes bowling and basketball. She also likes to spend her free time hanging out with her friends and her family.

Overall, Baker loves working and living an active life. Truly loving her job has made it easy for her to keep up the good work helping others around her in her community.
