September Family Care Council Florida Meeting

On September 21, Family Care Council representatives from across the state gathered together for the Family Care Council Florida (FCCF) meeting in Orlando. The meeting began with presentations from Agency for Persons with Disabilities. APD Chief of Staff David Dobbs discussed the redesign of the iBudget Florida waiver, while Deputy Director of Operations Clarence Lewis shared information on the impact of Hurricane Dorian, the adult day training and employment-related services transformation project, dental services, provider training, and more.

Meeting with the group for first time was Executive Director of the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council (FDDC) Valerie Breen. The FDDC advocates and promotes programs that positively impact individuals with developmental disabilities. They also provide self-advocates and families with an array of educational materials to help individuals with developmental disabilities flourish in their local community. Breen shared information about the role of the FDDC, as well as its goal to educate legislators about the importance of preserving the iBudget Florida waiver. There was also a presentation from Executive Director Kevin Lewis and Development Director Angela Katz from the Lee Association for Remarkable Citizens, Inc. (LARC). LARC was created in 1954 by parents who opposed sending their children to institutions because they did not meet the intelligent quotient standard to attend public school. Lewis and Katz shared information about LARC’s programs and services with  highlights of the adult day training and community support programs available in Lee County.
