Capstone Pet Barkery

By Trudy O’Brien

Thanks to a grant from Sunday’s Child for Capstone Adaptive Learning and Therapy Centers’ project called Capstone Pet Barkery, students attending the Transition Employment Center in Pensacola are gaining practical job experience and interpersonal skills while running a business of baking nutritious pet treats. Students employed at the Barkery receive a salary of at least minimum wage.

The Barkery closes the gap between those having no job experience to being able to include work experience on their resume, increasing their chances to become gainfully employed. Students gain invaluable, relevant job experience like ordering supplies, baking treats, packaging, selling, and marketing items for sale. They also learn interpersonal skills like customer service and teamwork.

Inclusion opportunities are enhanced as students sell the all-natural, homemade pet treats at local farmers’ markets, festivals, businesses, and the new Capstone Pet Place supply store in Milton. Income generated is invested back into the program to ensure sustainability and growth.
