A Job Means Smiles and Independence

By Anne Elizabeth Clark

There’s nothing better than a friendly face helping during a shopping spree. Karla Macy loves filling that role for shoppers in the Miami area.

Macy has worked as a member of the Marshalls-Home Goods team for almost five years. According to Jose Carbonell, her Supported Employment coach, she has had many different positions within the company and has gotten to try different roles to see what fits her best. Currently, she works as a lay-up processor, a maintenance associate, and a customer service associate. Her attention to detail and her willingness to learn have helped her grow and succeed at every position she has held with the company, and it has even led to a recent raise for Macy. She’s also been named Employee of the Month twice!

Macy’s favorite part of her job is the sense of independence and productivity it provides her. “I want to provide for my family, including my daughter and husband, and continue benefiting from services currently provided. I love having a source of income, so that I can make good financial decisions.” Macy also mentioned that her continued training at Marshalls-Home Goods will provide her and her family with a better future.

A big part of Macy’s job is interacting with people, which she also greatly enjoys. “I feel my job provides me with the right team of people and customers. I love being able to assist people. I love being surrounded by coworkers and a team of associates that provide support and nurturing. Friendly associates really set the tone and encourage me to continue working at Marshalls-Home Goods. I feel very happy to have the team of associates I have. I feel blessed. Everyone treats me with respect and honesty.”

Anette Lens, Macy’s Waiver Support Coordinator, said, “Seeing Karla’s success unfold and being a part of it has been a blessing. It’s been years in the making.” Lens also noted a behavior change in Macy that has helped her success. She said that Macy will always go out of her way to help others, even crossing over into other departments from time to time.

Macy is very dedicated to serving those around her and making them happy. Even during her free time, she takes her daughter to the park and goes to her school to have lunch with her. Quality time with her husband and daughter is important, but she also loves to pamper herself and paint her nails every so often!

Thanks to her hard work and services from the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD), Macy continues to grow and succeed at her job with Marshalls-Home Goods. Everyone seems to agree that Macy shines at her job and will only continue to climb and reach even greater heights and success in the future.
