Outing at Whispering Meadows Ranch in Flagler County

By Belinda Hoyt

Last month, a group from Indian Trails Middle School in Palm Coast sponsored an outing with members of Fun Coast Down Syndrome Association to enjoy some great outdoors activities.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. (Forming Relationships to Integrate, Engage, and Nurture those with Down Syndrome), a group of middle school students led by their teacher, Jennifer Colindres, plan and orchestrate events to increase social opportunities for those with Down syndrome.

Paula Wilburn, founder of Fun Coast Down Syndrome Association (FCDSA) of Flagler County, assisted the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. group and their teacher by inviting individuals and families that are members of FCDSA to an outing at Whispering Meadows Ranch. Whispering Meadows Ranch is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, 100 percent volunteer-based organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of those with disabilities and special needs through its recreational, educational, and equine assisted programs. All kinds of activities were set up for the two groups to enjoy together (wagon rides, horse shoe toss, gardening, crafts, checkers, bean bag toss, and saying “hello” to the horses).

Indian Trails Middle School students and FCDSA members enjoyed this event and look forward to attending other events in the community in the near future. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. has held two other events this school year to increase social interaction by integrating, engaging, and nurturing their new friends with other community groups as well.
