Connecting the Dots

Join Area 4 FCC for the fifth-annual Connecting the Dots conference on April 10, 9-1 pm at the Schultz Center in Jackonville.

The keynote speaker this year is Sean McElwee, cast member from the hit television series “Born This Way.” The Emmy Award-winning reality show highlights seven young adults with Down syndrome as they work toward greater independence. Navigating issues with housing, transportation, employment and relationships are all topics during each season. Sean also has his own clothing line "Seanese."  Sean’s presentation is entitled “It Could Happen – all about possABILITIES!”

Joining Sean is his mother, Sandra McElwee, an author and advocate for the Down syndrome community. Sandra’s presentation is “Transforming a School,” the story of how Sean was the first with any disability to be fully included in his school, and how by fourth grade the entire school transformed into an inclusive school.

Following the keynote speech, the conference offers two subsequent breakout presentations (12 sessions), including a variety of topics such as: strategies for working with children with anxiety or OCD, Local Resources (panel), Healthy Living Strategies (panel), Positive Behavior Supports, Legal Strategies, Youth Mental Health, pre-employment strategies for parents, Financial Strategies, Self-Directed IEPs, and communication strategies for those with limited verbal skills (repeated).

There will also be a great lineup of 40+ community resource agencies as vendors.

Conference fee is $10. Continental breakfast and snacks included. Lunch not provided.

Certificates of completion will be available after the conference.
