An Important Player on the McDonald’s Team

By Zoe Linafelt

Collin Cox has always been very motivated and dependable but had trouble finding a good job match at first. With encouragement from Goodwill Suncoast and his supported employment coach, Karen Taylor, in July of 2017 he found a job as a crew member at McDonald’s, and it stuck.

When asked to describe himself, Cox said, “I am a good friend, I like to help people, and I enjoy my life.” His job now allows him to help others and save money. His goals for the future are: “I want to be happy and work at McDonalds.” He also hopes to work toward earning his driver license.

Four days a week, Cox sets up the meal trays, wipes the tables, maintains the outdoor area, cleans the drink and condiment stations, mops floors, sweeps the kitchen, and takes out the trash. He’s the only maintenance person during his shift, so he’s responsible for making sure everything is clean and organized for staff and customers.

Cox has a disability and receives services from the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD).

“Collin is a good worker, he never talks back, he never calls in, and he is always on time”, said Cox's supervisor Mark Cancel. He said he can be strict with Cox, but they also joke around.

Cox lives independently and usually rides his bicycle to work. He is willing to work weekends when needed and is even ready to take on more hours. His one rule is that he doesn’t work Friday nights; those are reserved for cheering on the Lakeland High School football team at its home games.

Collin Cox loves his job as a crew member at McDonald’s in Lakeland.
