Preparing for Legislative Session

By Director Barbara Palmer

The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) is gearing up for the 2019 legislative session, which begins on March 5. APD has been asked to present at several committee meetings. I most recently spoke to the Senate Children, Families, and Elder Affairs Committee on January 22 about our agency priorities.

The agency has a new Legislative Affairs Director, Jeff Ivey, who is doing a great job scheduling meetings with legislators to discuss issues affecting APD. Jeff and I look forward to advocating for the agency’s priorities so individuals with developmental disabilities have the resources they need to participate in their local communities.

I am very excited to work with our new Governor this session. Governor Ron DeSantis is very focused on providing needed services to Floridians. I will be talking to him and his staff to ensure they are knowledgeable about APD’s priorities and the needs of the people we serve.

We are also gearing up to recognize March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and celebrate Developmental Disabilities Day on March 20 in Tallahassee. March 20 will also be Transportation Disadvantaged Day. If your schedule allows, please come to Florida’s Capitol to advocate on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities. I hope to see you there.
