Heroes Among Us

By Maria Angeles Linares

The Agency for Persons with Disabilities has some very remarkable clients and employees. In honor of Veteran’s Day, I was inspired to write about one very remarkable employee and coworker, Frank Thomas. Frank is one of our QSI Assessors and is in the field every day making sure client information is up to date. What some of us did not know is that Frank is a Vietnam War veteran.

Frank joined the Navy at age 18 and served for six years. He was stationed on the USS Charleston LKA-113, an amphibious cargo ship that was the lead ship in her class. He spent one year in the city of Da Nang while stationed in Vietnam.

Frank was a Seaman, and he saw active combat in Vietnam. As result of a successful mission to move explosives from the southern tip of Vietnam to the northern territory, Frank and his unit were awarded the Bronze Star. The Bronze Star is awarded for heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone. Frank also lost one brother and a cousin to the Vietnam War.

We thank Frank and his family for his service and their sacrifice.
