Crisis Intervention Training

Last month, APD Northwest Region staff led the cognitive disorders portion of Crisis Intervention Training with local law enforcement officers from Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, and Liberty counties. During this portion of the training, officers were taught signs that may signal a person has a cognitive or developmental disability. Attendees also learned appropriate ways to communicate to avoid over-stimulation and over-reaction.

APD staff shared some reasons why people with disabilities are considered a vulnerable population and what to look for if someone may be the victim of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

As a hands-on activity, the officers used “Brain Boxes” to experience how people with cognitive disabilities can struggle to communicate while mentally processing tasks. From these exercises and lessons, officers experienced a greater understanding of the challenges that individuals with disabilities can face when attempting to engage in high-stimulation situations.
