Family Care Council Celebrates 25 Years of Service

The Area 8 Family Care Council (FCC) celebrated 25 years of service by hosting a community awareness day. During the event, Fort Myers City Attorney Grant Alley shared the joy of parenting a child with Down syndrome and thanked the council members for their continued service on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

The evening included information about the history of the FCCs, the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD), and the Our Voices Together Coalition, as well as an introduction to dream boards, an activity waiver support coordinators are using to assist with person-centered planning.

The Area 8 FCC would like to thank their sponsors, Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida, LARC of Lee County, the Community Resource Network, and APD for their help in creating a successful event.

Family Care Council Florida September Meeting

Family Care Council Florida (FCCF) leadership and representatives from across the state gathered together for their bi-monthly meeting in Orlando last month. The statewide council kicked off the weekend with an informational session on bylaws with APD attorney Lisa Kuhlman, who shared the importance of aligning council bylaws with Section 393.502 of the Florida Statutes.

Additional guest speakers included Jeannette Estes, APD’s Acting Regional Operations Manager for the Central Region, who presented an agency update, and Denishia Sword from the Department of Financial Services, who shared information about the My Money Program. My Money is a program created to help individuals with developmental disabilities learn and practice financial skills at their own pace through educational videos and interactive games. Lessons focus on money basics, budgeting, bank accounts, government benefit programs, and ways to find and keep employment. You can learn about the My Money program by visiting www.myfloridacfo.com/mymoney.

The next statewide council meeting will be held in Orlando November 16-17.  Additional information about the upcoming meeting, as well as local FCC activities, may be found at www.fccflorida.org.
