Training on Government Benefits & Pooled Special Needs Trust Held in Tallahassee

By Willie Dawkins-Miller

It is estimated that over a million seniors and persons with disabilities are challenged with the high cost of health care, medication, and living expenses. Advocates & Guardians for the Elderly & Disabled (AGED) presented Navigating Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid Training at Clarity Pointe Tallahassee on April 18. Founding Executive Director Nick Barton, Senior Trust & Financial Advisor Sharon Reich, and Co-Presenter Tom Jones, Esquire, opened the training with the presentation on Social Security Disability Insurance and Medicare, Social Security Income and Medicaid, an eligibility requirements overview, and a discussion on the availability of services for the elderly and persons with disabilities. Many of the eligibility requirements for government benefits are resource-based, and oftentimes persons in need of care are eliminated due to exceeding resource allowances. AGED is a 501(c)3 nonprofit trust company that assists seniors and persons with disabilities of all ages in qualifying for government benefits, reducing medication costs, and preserving assets.

AGED Special Needs Pooled Trust and ABLE United (Achieving a Better Life Experience Act) are just two organizations that can be effective resources for seniors and persons with disabilities, allowing them to place income and assets that are over government benefit limit requirements into a trust account(s) so that they may qualify for much-needed medication and health care. John Finch, CEO of ABLE United, a program specifically established to assist persons with disabilities to save private funds to support health, independence, and quality of life, informed the audience, composed of approximately 50 community organizations and providers, that the Florida Legislature took the first step this session to amend Florida ABLE statutes and remove Medicaid recovery from ABLE United accounts. The training continued with information on AGED Pooled Special Needs Trusts, when and how to establish a trust, when can the trust be utilized, and how a special needs trust works.
