2018 is Here!

By Director Barbara Palmer

I was just getting used to 2017, and now we are in 2018. Wow! Time does fly.  All of us at the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) are looking forward to the coming year. We are preparing for the Legislative Session which begins on January 9. We will be meeting with legislators to support the funding of Governor Scott’s budget recommendations that will help APD and its customers next fiscal year.

Other priorities for 2018 include continuing educational opportunities for waiver support coordinators. APD wants to ensure WSCs have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet the needs of our APD customers. It is the agency’s responsibility to provide the information to WSCs so they are poised for success.

Another area of focus is improving the response to disasters like Hurricanes Irma and Maria. We are reviewing our Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) and supporting our providers and clients as they develop their emergency plans to incorporate lessons learned in 2017. Our goal is to keep everyone safe during an emergency.

We expect 2018 to be another fantastic year for APD and the people we serve as we continue to work together with our customers, families, partners, waiver support coordinators, stakeholders, and others. Thank you for all that you do to serve people with developmental disabilities in Florida.

I wish you a very Happy New Year!
