Legislative Session is Here

By Director Barbara Palmer

The Florida Legislative Session is underway, and much is happening at the Capitol. It is a very exciting time for the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD). The agency is receiving support from both the House and Senate in their initial budget proposals. We hope the final budget will include additional dollars to support both individuals on the waiting list and on the waiver.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day at the Capitol will be held on Valentine’s Day, February 14. On the same day, it will also be Transportation Disadvantaged Awareness Day in the Capitol Courtyard. APD will be there sharing information with many other disability organizations. If you are in the Tallahassee area, we hope to see you there.

To support Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day, Governor Rick Scott has issued a proclamation declaring our special day throughout the state. Click here to read the proclamation.

It is heartening to see how self-advocates, providers, families, stakeholders, and others are working together to advocate for people with disabilities. I want to extend my appreciation to everyone for this collaboration which is helping APD achieve its goals with the Legislature to help those we serve.
