F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Host Breakfast in Flagler County

By Belinda Hoyt

On October 27, a group from Indian Trails Middle School in Palm Coast held a Pancake Breakfast to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. (Forming Relationships to Integrate, Engage, and Nurture those with Down Syndrome), a group of middle school students led by their teacher Jennifer Colindres, planned and orchestrated an event to increase social opportunities for those with Down syndrome.

Paula Wilburn, founder of Fun Coast Down Syndrome Association [FCDSA] of Flagler County, assisted the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. group and their teacher by inviting individuals and families who are members of FCDSA to the pancake breakfast. Besides the wonderful pancakes, sausages, pastries, fruit, and donuts, there were fun activities, including card games, origami, arts and crafts, and dancing to some really cool tunes.

Flagler County School Board District 2 candidate John Fischer stopped by the event to speak with everyone in attendance. Many knew Mr. Fischer by name and fondly greeted him.

Indian Trails Middle School students and FCDSA members enjoyed this event and look forward to attending other events in the community. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. would like to hold four events this school year to increase social interaction by integrating, engaging, and nurturing their new friends with other community groups.
