Empowering All

On November 9, the Northwest Region Waiting List and Community Affairs Workstream conducted its Disability Mentoring event in Tallahassee.

The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) and the Adult & Community Education Transition Program (ACE) hosted a job fair themed America’s Workforce: Empowering All. The mission was to emphasize the importance of ensuring that all Americans, including Americans with disabilities, can put their skills and talents to work. It was an opportunity for the region job creators to enhance their commitment to a workplace that ensures America’s workforce empowers all.

Local businesses provided an orientation about their companies and provided interactive work skills for the youths ages 16-22. The students participated in industry-related job tasks, obtaining soft skills training, as well as having an opportunity to participate in mock interviews. Each student could select three employers to visit. Their job-related experience sessions allowed them to rotate to a different employer every 30 minutes. Approximately 125 students participated from Gadsden and Leon county schools and were supported by their mentors, teachers, and school administrators.

“We were emphatically thrilled about partnering with schools, local businesses, and community organizations to expose students to post-secondary education, training, and employment opportunities. We were honored to have employers who are equal opportunity employers and are willing to level the playing field to ensure that we have an inclusive community for individuals of all abilities,” said Regional Program Manager Octavius Jackson.
