Crisis Intervention Training Held in Panama City

Eligibility Determination Specialist Tracie Davis and Northwest Regional Program Manager Octavius Jackson hosted a crisis intervention training for law enforcement officers from Bay and five other surrounding counties last month in Panama City.

The event was coordinated through the Florida Sheriffs Association, which provides training to Florida county law enforcement agencies. Each month, Davis and Jackson travel across the state to provide training on developmental disabilities with other experts as part of the Sheriffs Association curriculum.

APD’s portion of the training focuses on the agency and how to identify and demonstrate effective communication methods while engaging with individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism during critical situations. The training also consists of engaging the officers in a simulated activity in which they get to experience the challenges individuals with cognitive disabilities face in highly tense and stimulating situations.
