Cabinet Declares October Disability Employment Awareness Month

Attorney General Pam Bondi introduced a resolution at the Florida Cabinet meeting on October 17 declaring the month of October as Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) in Florida.

Leaders from the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, the Department of Economic Opportunity, Vocational Rehabilitation, Blind Services, Veterans’ Affairs, Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, and Florida Association of Rehabilitation Facilities were present to accept the resolution.

Director Palmer explained the benefits of employment for those with disabilities and thanked both the Governor and Cabinet for their commitment to providing programs that assist people with disabilities find and maintain employment.

Longtime Pensacola Walmart employee Rachel Caylor Long addressed the meeting about the importance of including people with disabilities in the workforce. Speaking of the benefits she’s seen in her life thanks to her employment, Caylor Long said, “Because I have been able to grow as a person due to my employment, I have been able to achieve many things. Having a job truly makes a difference in a person’s life. Please continue to support employment programs for people with disabilities.”

Family Care Council Florida Chairperson Mary Smith shared a personal story of the impact the services provided through APD helped her family during a time of need. “These services to families are so critical. Without them the individuals would not be safe, they would not be able to be healthy, and have employment, and have lives.” Smith said. She continued by thanking the Cabinet and Governor Scott for their continued support for these programs and the Family Care Councils across the state.
