Shane Dahlen – APD Supported Employee

Shane Dahlen has always loved animals, and inspired by his passion for animals, he started working as a kennel assistant at Eastbay Animal Hospital in May 2013. Originally, Shane’s job duties included feeding, watering, cleaning, and walking the boarding animals and hospital patients; administering medications; and light janitorial work throughout the clinic.

Shane excelled in his position so much that he was given additional job duties to assist the veterinarian and technicians. He now takes care of refilling supplies in the surgery room, assists with holding and restraining animals for their patient exams and x-rays, and is no stranger to the observation and ‘readiness’ of the hospital’s surgery room. Shane absolutely loves his job and the people that he works with.

Recently, one of the boarding dogs became very ill while Shane was on duty. Nala, a Boxer, began vomiting profusely. Shane immediately notified Dr. Robin K. Moore, D.V.M, of the incident. Nala was silently suffering from gastric dilatation-volvulus, more commonly referred to as bloat, which occurs when the dog’s stomach dilates and rotates or twists and is similar to colic in horses. If Shane had not notified Dr. Moore immediately, Nala would not have survived as this type of syndrome is fast-acting and could have taken Nala’s life within 30 minutes.

Nala was rushed into immediate emergency surgery to correct her stomach rotation. Shane’s compassion, attentiveness, and immediate actions directly saved her life. Thankfully, Nala has made a complete recovery and is happily back home with her family, the Lances.

“Beyond Shane notifying me about Nala’s vomiting, he added that she appeared to be in pain, which was an alert to myself and staff,” said Dr. Moore. “After discussing this with my technicians, we all agreed that vomiting is something that occurs often at a Vet clinic and could have easily been overlooked. Because of Shane’s immediate notification and concern with pain, I was able to diagnose and treat Nala right away. He is the most reliable and dedicated staff that I have had the pleasure of working with.”
