Michael “Kaleb” Dees: Bringing His Positive Attitudes to Publix’s Team

By Debra Noel, Supported Employment Liaison

Holding down a good job in a large corporation is a challenge for most young people, but 26-year-old Michael “Kaleb” Dees makes it look easy.

After graduating from Armwood High School in Seffner, Dees wanted a job where he could put his skills to work and earn some money. With the natural supports provided by his loving family, Dees dressed in Publix colors and visited his local grocery several times. Management must have been impressed, as he caught their eye for an interview and was hired shortly thereafter. The Employment Team from Goodwill-Suncoast stepped up to provide coaching services and this month, Dees is celebrating four years in the Customer Service Department!

Although Dees admits that his favorite activities are dancing, photography, and tinkering with electronics, he does find his work at Publix to be fun as well. He works out three times a week at the gym, which gives him the stamina needed to bag groceries, stock shelves, or help customers to their car. Dees brings his positive attitude and engaging smile to the workplace where he is admired and respected by his co-workers and supervisors.

Veteran job coach from Goodwill-Suncoast David Phaneuf beams with pride when he works with Dees and refers to him as “a star.” David describes Dees as a thoughtful young man who is extremely responsible and so motivated to work that he rides his bicycle to and from work!

Coach David and Dees enjoy mutual respect which is likely the reason that Kaleb’s career star will continue to rise.

Dees is an APD customer receiving supported employment services through the Employment Enhancement Program (EEP).
