Developmental Disabilities Day at the Capitol

The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council and the Arc of Florida hosted Developmental Disabilities Day at the Capitol on March 21. Individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, caregivers, advocates, and friends visited with senators and representatives throughout the day to discuss the importance of inclusion and funding essential services for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Director Palmer joined Arc of Florida Executive Director Deborah Linton, Florida Developmental Disabilities Council Public Policy Coordinator Margaret Hooper, Senate President Pro Tempore Anitere Flores, House Majority Leader Ray Rodrigues, Representatives Gayle Harrell and Kathleen Peters, as well as many others to speak at a press conference in the Senate Portico.

The 2017 Idelio Valdes Leadership and Advocacy Award, named in honor of the late former Council member and self-advocate, was presented to Sarah Goldman of Tampa. There was also a special recognition of Arc and APD staff who have put together a choking prevention initiative.

APD Communications Director Melanie Mowry Etters, Deputy Communications Director Katie Strickland, and Graphic Designer Kimberly Tharpe had a display table on the 2nd floor of the Capitol for attendees. They answered questions from the public and distributed brochures.
