Family Care Council 12’s 2016 Second Annual ADA Celebration

Family Care Council 12 and the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) held their second annual ADA Night at the Jackie Robinson Ball Field in Daytona Beach.  July 2016 marked the 26th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990.

Prior to the events at the local ballpark, the NE Region’s Family Care Council Liaison Belinda Hoyt watched as FCC 12’s Vice Chair Christopher Spears and his wife, Christina, proudly held a panoramic photo. The photo was taken last year during the 25th anniversary celebration of the passage of the ADA.

Spears and his wife presented the photo to Judge Dawn Fields of the 7th Circuit Court, while standing on the Orange Avenue Courthouse steps. This was the exact spot the picture, with over 100 attendees, was taken last year. Judge Fields spoke about how the ADA had transformed many lives in the past 26 years.

Judge Fields intends to hang the historic photograph in her judge’s chamber in the Volusia County Courthouse.

Less than two hours later, Family Care Council 12 Chairperson Mary Ellen Ottman stood on the ballfield and beautifully sang the National Anthem. The Daytona Tortugas hosted the Jupiter Hammerheads in an excitingly close ballgame. The weather for the ballgame was extremely hot and humid until the sun went down and a cool breeze blew from the nearby Halifax River. FCC 12 members, along with APD staff, intend to continue celebrating the ADA anniversaries to educate, share and commemorate the significance of this great legislation.
