Torch Run

Lights, sirens, and lots of action occurred on April 5 in Tallahassee. The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run brought dozens of police motorcycles escorting hundreds of runners to the Capitol Courtyard. The runners were law enforcement officers who support Special Olympics, plus a group of students from Chiles High School in Tallahassee.  Florida Department of Law Enforcement Director Rick Swearingen carried the Flame of Hope into the courtyard for the ceremony on its way to Orlando for the Special Olympic State Games on May 20 and 21 that will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Special Olympics supporter Attorney General Pam Bondi emceed the ceremony. Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) Chief of Staff Karen Hagan joined the large crowd on the steps of the Old Capitol for remarks and a check presentation from Publix and Proctor and Gamble to Special Olympics. A check of more the $3 million was presented to support Special Olympics in Florida.
