Sunland Art in Park Coming Up

Creativity is something that lives in everyone and the residents of Sunland Center can attest to that. Several residents of Sunland recently spent the day at This, That and the Other Studio participating in a project that will be displayed at Sunland’s upcoming Art in the Park show. The project was led by local artist and owner Tori Sims Willis.

Willis noted that research has shown art activities have many benefits for individuals, adding that these kinds of art activities also offer residents the chance to get to know their neighbors and learn something new. “I get very excited when I see individuals with disabilities, whose lives may have limitations, express themselves through creativity.”

Sunland resident Michele B. commented “I never knew I was capable of doing what we all did. At first, I didn’t know what it was all about, but once we got into it, it was super!”

Willis stated residents who gave feedback on the project said they learned new ways to be creative, build relationships with others through participation, and would love to continue participating in similar activities or new artistic activities if available.

Sunland’s Art in the Park takes place at the beautiful Sunland Environmental Park on Saturday, May 7, from 10 am –noon.  To learn more about Art in the Park, partnership and volunteer opportunities at Sunland, contact Volunteer Services Coordinator Maria Johnson at 850-482-1331.
