Three Wishes Revisited

By Maria Angeles Linares

Mariah Diaz is 8 years old and one of APD Southern Region’s Miami Herald Wish Book nominees for 2015.  Mariah has cerebral palsy, lives with her parents, and is a happy little girl.  Mariah’s family has had a rough couple of years.  Her mother underwent transplant surgery in 2015 and as result of the surgery, had to quit her job in order to recuperate and help her body accept the new organ.  As a result of the lost income, the father, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, had to take on a second job in order to make ends meet.

Mariah’s wish was to have new walker, a tricycle and a balancing chair.  These items were not terribly expensive, but for a family with finances already stretched to the breaking point, they were completely out of reach.  The Wish Book came through with $300 in gift cards and I explained that the other items would come through when donors were found.  They were extremely grateful, but Mariah was hoping for her three wishes.

In April 2016, I was contacted by the Wish Book with the tremendous news that donors were found for all three items.  Gift cards were delivered to facilitate the purchase of the balancing chair and walker.  Because the tricycle was so large, it was delivered to their home directly.  Mariah’s three wishes had come true. Miracles do happen each and every day!
