Family Cafe

The 18th Annual Family Café was held June 10-12 at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando. The three-day event featured breakout sessions, an exhibit hall, speakers, and opportunities to interact with families.

The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) was well represented throughout the event. APD employees led several breakout sessions during Family Café covering topics from Human Trafficking to Consumer Directed Care Plus. APD Director Barbara Palmer led a popular session called Meet the APD Director. Employees from the Central Region did an outstanding job of manning the popular APD booth and answering questions throughout the conference.

Rhonda Sloan, Consumer Directed Care Plus (CDC+) Program Administrator, gives a presentation. APD offered many different informational presentations this year.

On June 10, Governor Rick Scott spoke at the conference where he highlighted two APD families. First, Governor Scott recognized Michael L. Jacobson who is 26 years old and lives in Ocala. He was able to land a job at Serra Senior Transitions, LLC as a mover/packer through APD’s Employment Enhancement Project. He is thriving in his new job.

The second family recognized by Governor Scott was the Moore family which has three children receiving waiver services from APD.  The family consists of Susan and Richard Moore with son, Harrison (19), and daughters, Hannah (14), Haven (11), & Hailee (11).  Haven is the only child who does not receive APD services.

Individuals and families were excited to get photos with the Governor after his remarks. Governor Scott stayed late to ensure that everyone was able to get a photo with him.
