Session is In

By Director Barbara Palmer

The Florida Legislative Session is just a few weeks underway and much is happening at the Capitol. It is a very exciting time for the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD).  The agency is receiving widespread support from both the House and Senate. There are many proposals this session, including the budget, which will benefit individuals with disabilities.

I want to thank Senate President Andy Gardiner and House Speaker Steve Crisafulli for passing two bills to benefit those with Unique Abilities during the 2016 Legislative Session. On January 21, the first measures signed into law by Governor Rick Scott were those two bills demonstrating that they are a top priority.  They are:

HB 7003 Relating to Individuals with Disabilities – This bill expands employment opportunities and creates a financial literacy program for individuals with disabilities.

SB 672   Educational Options – This bill increases educational opportunities for students with unique abilities, expands the Personal Learning Scholarship Account Program, and provides funding for school uniforms.

It is wonderful how self-advocates, providers, families, stakeholders, associations, and others are working together to advocate for those with disabilities. I want to extend my appreciation to everyone for this positive collaboration which is helping APD achieve its goals.

This month on February 18, Developmental Disabilities Day at the Capitol will be held. APD will be there sharing information with many other disability organizations.  I hope to see you there.
