APD Wins Organization of the Year

The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) was awarded the Organization of the Year by the Key Training Center on July 15. Central Region Operations Manager Clarence Lewis accepted the award on behalf of APD.

The following was information was shared by Key Training Center Executive Director Melissa Walker at the event when presenting the award.

“This year’s recipient of our Organization of the Year goes to a state government agency where their employees went above and beyond to respond to our unexpected crisis situation of abruptly losing the funding of an Adult with Disabilities grant.

The Key Training Center depended on this funding to provide lifelong educational opportunities for 187 Adults with an Intellectual Disability between the ages of 22 and 65. The Key Center lost annually over $95,000 last July.  This agency immediately partnered with us to try and minimize our losses and to continue to further these individuals education through our Adult Basic Education classes.

These instructional hands-on learning classes are essential in providing daily living skills for meal planning, cooking, nutrition, cleaning, exercise, laundry, sewing, public transportation, traffic signals and safety. Social skills for maintaining positive relationships at home, work, and play. Basic knowledge skills for reading, writing, money management, telling time and making change. Also human growth and development focusing on health, family concepts, and relationships with others.

Thanks to the Agency for Persons with Disabilities we were able to successfully move past this event. We are blessed to be part of the APD’s Central Region that has some of the best employees in state government that supports people with developmental disabilities to live, learn, and work in their communities.”
