The Arc Gateway PALS moving toward Career Success

The Arc Gateway Program for Adult Learning and Support (PALS) wrapped up its first summer semester towards achieving success at Pensacola State College (PSC).  The program, which started in January 2015, offers adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to obtain job skills, attend specialized classes, and work towards independence.   During the two-year program, students take courses in career exploration, vocational training, independent living skills, and workplace readiness.  The curriculum is designed to prepare students to become lifelong learners connected to the community.  Instructors work with each student on a person-centered focus to explore careers through specialized classes, targeted training, and job internships to reach each individualized goal.

Over the summer, students participated in internships in collaboration with PSC, as well as career exploration trips within the community to broaden their horizon of choices.  Summer internships included a variety of options with some working at PSC’s Performing Arts Department where students learned the ropes of the backstage on the theater production, Mame.  Some had the opportunity to exercise technical skills while learning hands-on mechanics in the HVAC department.  Others worked on graphic design and clerical duties throughout PSC.  Students participated also in many other departments including Public Safety, Food Service, Childcare, Biology, Cosmetology, Grounds and Maintenance, and Student Affairs.

These learning experiences help students make career decisions, network with potential employers, select courses of study, and develop job skills relevant to future employment. Through the interaction of work and career exploration, students can enhance their academic knowledge, personal development, and professional preparation.

PALS is looking for students ready to start their adventure!  Applications are currently being accepted for the Spring 2016 class.  Applications are available to download at www.arc-gateway.org/PALS.  For further information, please call 850-484-1185 or email pals@arc-gateway.org.
