Journey to a Job
On October 19, APD participated in Tallahassee Community College’s Workforce Development’s Building Legacies, Avenues to Independence conference that focused on employment for people with disabilities. Attendees learned the importance of:
- A resume and cover letter;
- Networking and collecting business cards / people’s contact information;
- How to dress;
- Interviewing techniques; and
- Finding the right job.
There were breakout workshops focused on accommodations, landing a job, employer hiring incentives, and entrepreneurship.
J.R. Harding, Ed.D and LeeAnn Herman, J.D. of APD’s community supports presented a workshop titled: Work Force Incentives for Both the Employer and Employee that covered:
- Five myths about persons with disabilities;
- Six keys to inclusion;
- Federal incentives for employers;
- Best practices for finding qualified employees; and
- Social Security workforce incentives.
There were more than 200 participants and a dozen vendors providing information about services, technology, and resources.
