Fun Day Lives Up to its Name

By Maria Angeles Linares

On March 7, a cloudy Saturday morning, Southern Region Manager Evelyn Alvarez and I debated if we should embark on our scheduled trip from Miami to Key Largo. We had planned to attend the 6th Annual Special Needs Fun Day as part of our ADA 25th anniversary commemoration, but the morning was quite dreary. Would our trip be wasted? Was it going to rain? Should we take the chance? All excellent questions, but in the end, we decided that since we had planned to go, we should just chance it and go. That was the right decision!  Most of the Fun Day participants were residents of the Keys, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that United Cerebral Palsy had made the trek from West Palm Beach to join the fun.

When we arrived at Key Largo Community Park, the group was getting ready to begin the festivities. They had a grill going with hamburgers and hot dogs, coolers with drinks and cold water, and a popcorn machine giving the event a distinct carnival atmosphere. The field was set up for the competition with low hurdles to jump, Hula-Hoop tandem races to navigate, and other such obstacles to overcome. The Fun Day participants were eager to compete and it proved to be as much fun for the competitors as it was for those of us on the pep squad.

It was cloudy and breezy, making the day perfect for being outdoors. The sun peaked out later in the afternoon, prompting many requests to take advantage of the sun and go to the beach for a swim.

As we drove back to Miami, Alvarez and I were pleased with our decision to take the chance and go. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and our time with our customers and friends from the Southern and Southeast regions. A special “Thank You” to the event sponsor, Max and friends from the Key Largo Moose Lodge, and Pat, who made this event possible for the sixth year!

Everyone was a winner and it was a perfect day!
