Special Session is Here

By Director Barbara Palmer

Today begins the Special Legislative Session in Tallahassee. The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) will be at the Capitol continuing to make sure lawmakers are aware of important APD funding issues we hope will be addressed in the final budget. Legislators have until June 20 to pass a final budget during this Special Session.

I am happy to report, on May 21, Governor Rick Scott signed Senate Bill 642 creating the Florida ABLE program for individuals with disabilities to save money in a tax-free savings account for future services without losing their eligibility for state and federal benefits. The Florida Prepaid College Board will create and administer the program. Scott also designated the State Board of Administration to create the Florida ABLE Trust Fund, which will hold appropriations and moneys for the Florida ABLE program. I think this will be a great help to families who want to save money for their family member with a disability. As more information is available, it will be posted on myfloridaprepaid.com.

Remember that the 17th annual Family Café will be held June 5 through 7 at the Caribe Royale Hotel in Orlando, located at 2101 World Center Drive. The annual Family Café is free for families with a member who has a disability.

This three-day event offers families the chance to network with other families and find out about a wide range of public and private resources. Check out the Conference at a Glance. For more information, visit FamilyCafe.net.
