By Annette Zeeb

The Disabilities Summit Council celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the ADA at their monthly meeting in Pensacola on July 24 at the West Florida Rehabilitation Institute. Warren Jernigan, Chairman and Founder, opened the meeting with the presentation of a flashlight to Erick Turner for being a light for people with disabilities showing that with persistence and determination you can overcome many obstacles and that successful employment in the community is possible.

Sherri Myers, City of Pensacola Councilwoman, presented the history and progress of the ADA along with stressing the importance of continuing the efforts in ensuring civil rights of all people.  The ADA was passed as a result of many years of struggle.  Enforcement continues to be a challenge.  People with disabilities need to be visible and persistent about their rights.  The Job Accommodations Network (JAN) is an outstanding resource covering all disabilities and how to accommodate them.  The JAN website is https://askjan.org or phone 1-800-526-7234.
